I was wondering whether there is also a "deeper" etymology to those valsi - i.e., I would sometimes also like to know, what natlang sources influenced the choice of the valsi ... Is there a canonical source where to look these kind of things up?
Well, yes and no. There is an algorithm involved in creating the gismu, see http://www.lojban.org/no/publications/reference_grammar/chapter4.html#s14
Most of the stuff is _somewhere_ on lojban.org, but the page is trashed way too much. See http://www.lojban.org/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=gismu+Etymology for a list of words used to feed the algorithm. There's some inofficial work to it, too: https://www.dealloc.org/~mublin/
Hope that helps. If there's someone interested in helping to sort things out , lojban.org is a wiki :)
